DESCRIPTION
The Centre for Useless Splendour is not a building, or a physical place. It exists as an imprint and as a conceptual formulation of the research taking place in a School of Art. Here we privilege the making of art - as a way of thinking, and as a form of knowledge. Our Fine Art PhD programme supports artists in formulating and realising major projects. They exemplify a diverse range of formal and intellectual approaches critically engaged with, and significant to, the expanded discourse of contemporary art practice. A Research Statement Exhibition marks the culmination of each PhD project and this year the Centre for Useless Splendour has commissioned completing students S. E. Barnet, Arnaud Desjardin and Matthew Thompson to each produce a print publication and an editioned screenprint poster to accompany their exhibitions. - Sarah Jones (PhD Director, School of Fine Art)
